Art/History Trail

The Wallkill River School’s Art-History Trail Geo-Tour.

Here at the Wallkill River School, we love plein air painting (outdoor painting), and it has always been one of our missions to get artists out of there cramped studios and get them outside, to paint and enjoy the Hudson Valley’s rich historical landscape. We have partnered 12 of our premiere plein air artists with 12 of Orange County’s most important historical sites to bring the joy of art and history to artists and non-artists alike! our Artists designed 12 “geo-caches” and strategically placed them throughout all 12 sites to create a one of a kind “geo-tour’ experience.  These sites are easy to locate and open to the public. Visit all 12 sites, collect the secret letter printed on Artist’s Trading Cards inside each unique geocache, unscramble the phrase and win a geo token! Each geocache is unique, and designed by the artist designated to that site  .  You can sign your name to the logbook inside the geocache to prove you were there, and take an artist’s trading card with a secret letter inside the cache. Each Historical Site has a Art/History Trail sign.  Find the geocache within 10 feet of the sign. While you are there, enjoy the museums and parks located throughout the sites on the tour ,almost all of which are free and open to the public, and don’t forget to support the wonderful local businesses featured throughout the tour.

The Art/History trail is a creative place-making project, and was recently funded in part by a grant from the Hudson River Valley Greenway. The rest of the funding will be raised in a benefit auction of artist’s work created at historic sites on Nov. 5th, from 5-7pm.

There will be a kick-off event on Saturday, November 5th starting at 3pm at the newburgh waterfront and finishing up with a reception for the exhibit at the Wallkill River School. An Exhibit of paintings done by our artists of these historical sites will be on display at the Wallkill River School from November 1st-5th with a live benefit auction November 5th 5-7pm
